How Many Peel and Stick Tiles Do I Need? A Simple Coverage Guide

by LiviTile

You've found the perfect pattern. You can already picture it behind the sink. Now comes the question every DIYer asks at this point: how many sheets do I actually need?

Good news — it's simple math, and you don't need to be a math person. Grab a tape measure and a cup of coffee, and let's figure it out together.

Step 1: Measure your space

Measure the area you want to cover in inches:

If your space is an L-shape or has a section with a different height (like a taller section next to a window), split it into simple rectangles and measure each one separately. You'll add them up at the end.

Tip: Measure twice, in a couple of spots. Walls and counters aren't always perfectly straight, so use the largest number you find.

Step 2: Work out the square footage

Multiply width × height to get square inches, then divide by 144 to turn it into square feet:

Square feet = (width in inches × height in inches) ÷ 144

Example: a kitchen backsplash 60 in wide and 18 in tall is 60 × 18 = 1,080 square inches. 1,080 ÷ 144 = 7.5 sq ft.

Don't subtract windows or outlets unless they're large. Small gaps like outlets get absorbed by your extra-sheets buffer anyway.

Step 3: Divide by the coverage per sheet

This is where sheet size matters.

Using our 7.5 sq ft backsplash:

Step 4: Add about 10% extra

Real walls have corners, edges, outlets and that one awkward spot next to the fridge. You'll trim some sheets, and patterned tiles sometimes need a little extra so the design lines up nicely across seams.

We suggest adding about 10% to your sheet count, and rounding up. For busy, all-over patterns like patchwork or mosaic, 10% is usually plenty. For geometric designs like checkerboard, where alignment really shows, you may want a touch more.

Back to our example:

Having a spare sheet or two tucked away is also handy if you ever need to patch a spot later.

Step 5: Pick your pack

LiviTile sheets come in 5-sheet or 10-sheet packs.

So for our 60 × 18 in backsplash:

Quick reference: common spaces

Here are a few typical sizes to help you estimate. Always measure your own space — these are just starting points for 12 × 12 in designs.

Space Example size Sq ft Sheets (incl. ~10%) Suggested pack
Small bathroom vanity backsplash 30 × 18 in 3.75 5 1 × 5-sheet
Coffee-bar nook 30 × 30 in 6.25 7–8 1 × 10-sheet
Standard kitchen backsplash run 60 × 18 in 7.5 9 1 × 10-sheet
Laundry room wall strip 72 × 24 in 12 14 1 × 10 + 1 × 5
Small accent wall 48 × 48 in 16 18 2 × 10-sheet

For Confetti Brick, divide the sq ft column by 0.77 instead, then add 10%.

Mixing patterns? Plan each area separately

Love two designs? Some people use one pattern behind the sink and a coordinating one on the coffee-bar wall, or tile a feature stripe in a contrasting design. Just measure and calculate each area on its own, then round up each one. It's easier to keep track, and you won't end up short on the pattern you like most.

Before you order: a quick checklist

A note on timing

LiviTile ships to the US only. Orders ship within 2 days of payment from Zhuhai, China, and standard delivery takes about 11–14 days, counted from payment. If you're planning your refresh around a date — guests arriving, a move-in day, a holiday — it's worth ordering a little early, and ordering everything you need at once so all your sheets arrive together.
